Special Talk - Puglia through the Lens
Join us for a special talk with Dr Angelo Maggi on architecture and landscape in Puglia, as part of the Puglian Italian Fest held in London in June 2026.
Puglia has long been one of the most beloved Italian regions among photographers, architects and scholars, both Italian and international. Its visual power, shaped by light, stone, open horizons and rural Mediterranean architecture, has given rise to an extraordinary iconographic heritage. Numerous photobooks and research projects bear witness to how this territory has welcomed the gaze of great masters of photography, who have been able to convey its vitality through fresh and profoundly contemporary visual perspectives. The talk brings together architects, photographers and visual culture scholars to explore the Murgia dei Trulli as a place where timeless architecture meets a humanised landscape. Rural constructions, trulli, masserie, jazzi, dry-stone walls, become keys to understanding a Mediterranean world shaped by ancient gestures, skilled building techniques and a harmonious relationship between people and nature. The talk will also shed light on the romantic, evocative and spiritual dimension of the Apulian landscape between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as seen through the photographic eye and travel accounts of artists, poets, geographers and, above all, architects. A journey that shows how Puglia has been, and continues to be, a laboratory of imagination — a place with the power to inspire narratives, visions and projects.
Angelo Maggi is Associate Professor of Architectural History and History of Architectural Photography at Università Iuav di Venezia. Maggi trained as an architect at the Università Iuav di Venezia, and he obtained his PhD in Architecture and Visual Studies at Edinburgh College of Art.
